So, and this is just a shot in the dark, perhaps you woke up this morning to realize that it’s Halloween and you have no idea what you’re going to wear to your sister’s friend’s cousin’s costume party tonight. Your natural gift of procrastination has caught up to you, and you need a costume, and fast!

Never fear, little guppy! This special Halloween installment is shore to help you design your perfect mermaid costume, even if you’re in a time crunch!

First, you’ll need to decide whether you want to be a Mermaid or a Merman. This post will help you design your own last minute mermaid costume, and this link will bring you to my post to design a last minute merman costume. Gather whatever crafty items you can find around your house—and let’s get down to some fishy business!

For a Mermaid Costume:

For a successful mermaid costume, it will require a few more details than a merman costume, but again it comes down to three main features: 1) the top, 2) the tail and 3) the make-up. You can be creative with how you interpret your mermaid costume, and with just a few details, you can make this last minute costume really sparkle!

The way I see it, your mermaid top and tail combo opportunities are endless (depending on your resources), but here are a few ideas to get you started. Start with a base, such as a bra, a bandeau, a tank top, t-shirt, or even a dress. Using felt, scrap material, or construction paper, cut out large sea shell shapes in the color of your choice. You can glue or pin these shapes onto your costume to create the classic seashell top! If you have more time on your hands, you can hot glue small shells, jewels, or beads onto your top to add a little more magic.

Your tail is the next big thing to worry about. If you do not use a dress for the base of your top, think about what items you can use to represent your tail. You can go for the sheet method that I described in the merman version of this post, or you could try a long maxi skirt. Another Halloween costume staple that has become popular in recent years would be a tutu skirt. It may not look exactly like a mermaid tail, but it’ll look trendy and your friends will get the picture!

The easiest way to make your last minute costume shrimply fintastic is through your make-up and accessories. Pile on the pearl necklaces, bracelets, and earrings! Maybe even dig up that puka shell necklace you wore religiously in middle school. For your hair, I would suggest either a loose fishtail braid or easy beach waves. Feel free to spray in some fun colors or add extensions, if you have them on hand! Here are some links to some mer-mazing make-up tutorials I love:

And, voila! You’ve pulled together a stunning costume for that party you’re gonna be a star at!

Best Wishes and Swimmy Fishes,
